Implicit complexity over an arbitrary structure: Quantifier alternations

چکیده
We provide machine-independent characterizations of some complexity classes, over an arbitrary structure, in the model of computation proposed by L. Blum, M. Shub and S. Smale. We show that the levels of the polynomial hierarchy correspond to safe recursion with predicative minimization and the levels of the digital polynomial hierarchy to safe recursion with digital predicative minimization. Also, we show that polynomial alternating time corresponds to ∗This author has been supported by French Ministry of Research through ANR Project SOGEA. †This author has been supported City University of Hong Kong SRG grant 7001290. ‡This author has also been supported City University of Hong Kong SRG grant 7001290.

Quantified Constraints: The Complexity of Decision and Counting for Bounded Alternation
We consider constraint satisfaction problems parameterized by the set of allowed constraint predicates. We examine the complexity of quantified constraint satisfaction problems with a bounded number of quantifier alternations and the complexity of the associated counting problems. We obtain classification results that completely solve the Boolean case, and we show that hardness results carry ov...
متن کاملBeating Exhaustive Search for Quantified Boolean Formulas and Connections to Circuit Complexity
We study algorithms for the satisfiability problem for quantified Boolean formulas (QBFs), and consequences of faster algorithms for circuit complexity. • We show that satisfiability of quantified 3-CNFs with m clauses, n variables, and two quantifier blocks (one existential block and one universal) can be solved deterministically in time 2n−Ω( √ n) · poly(m). For the case of multiple quantifie...
متن کاملThe Role of Quantifier Alternations in Cut Elimination
Extending previous results from the author’s master’s thesis, subsequently published in the proceedings of CSL 2003, on the complexity of cut elimination for the sequent calculus LK, we discuss the role of quantifier alternations and develope a measure to describe the complexity of cut elimination in terms of quantifier alternations in cut formulas and contractions on such formulas.
متن کاملFirst-Order Quantifiers and the Syntactic Monoid of Height Fragments of Picture Languages
We investigate the expressive power of first-order quantifications in the context of monadic second-order logic over pictures. We show that k+1 set quantifier alternations allow to define a picture language that cannot be defined using k set quantifier alternations preceded by arbitrarily many first-order quantifier alternations. The approach uses, for a given picture language L and an integer ...
متن کاملSimple Sentences That Are Hard to Decide
It was considered to be “typical for first order theories” that a restriction to sentences with only a limited number of quantilier alternations leads to an exponential decrease of complexity. Using domino games, which were treated in a previous paper to describe computations of alternating Turing machines, we prove that this is not always true. We present a list of theories, all of them decida...
